Bethwins Work Party
Fishery Management Report by Steve Simmonds
Bethwins, which is a bit of a hidden diamond, is now looking even better and was described by one of the attendees at the recent workparty as a real picture.
No major work was carried out apart from the removal of one tree which was dangerously leaning over into the upper pond and the roots were lifting a large section of bank. If the tree went any further then it would be over and in the water and a lot more difficult to remove – not to mention the mess that would have been made of the bankside. It has been taken back pretty much to ground level and we are reasonably confident that it will regenerate quite quickly without the threat of falling into the lake.
Most of the work involved clearing the paths and swims but they did not require a huge amount of effort having been well maintained for the last few years. One very positive point and a testament really to you the members and the obvious care a pride you have in your waters is the fact that we found only one piece of litter on the fishery (some would stay still one too many of course !).
The new access to the water has been commented on and it was noted that this is a great improvement over the previous walk along the road.
Also as a matter of interest at least one of the attendees at the work party having seen the water went back and fished the water and his session resulted in a good bag of carp with at least 1 in double figures. I also had a call from a new member the other day, who has fished the water for the first time and was raving about it. Although he failed to land a carp from the lower pond having connected with a few he was pleasantly surprised to land two fish one just above and one just below double figures from the tench pond. He had obviously been expecting to find a few tench so the carp were quite a struggle on his setup but he did manage to get them both in the net!
