Illegal Fish Traps Found on Rother
Author
- Roger Poole
We have had a problem with eel traps being discovered at Fittleworth,
fortunately someone in our Club recovered one but we need him to come
forward as the trap has an EA licence tag which will allow us to trace
the owner. We and the
Barlavington Estate need this evidence urgently because it is illegal to catch eels with a trap unless permission is
granted both by the landowner and ourselves as the controlling Club.
We would like the Member who found the eel trap early last week to please contact us urgently and ask all our members to keep a close lookout for anyone laying a trap, or report immediately if finding one on either the Rother or Arun. A vehicle registration would be helpful but we would urge all our Members to avoid any threatening confrontation.
Incidentally to protect threatened stocks a new Fisheries Byelaw was introduced on June 1st stating that all rod-caught eel must be returned to the water alive, including when they are taken from estuaries and coastal waters.
